Fryer, a Canadian expatriate, has a vivid, descriptive writing style that transports the reader into the diverse settings in which his adventures occurred. Some are shocking — like the local police chief who sold him a .25 Beretta pistol (illegal for foreigners to own) for protection when buying artifacts for cash in wild and lawless places, and then kept badgering him to buy even more and bigger guns. After all, he did have to use that Beretta in a night-time forest gunfight that might have turned out badly for him!
Most of Fryer’s more than 60 stories — all true, he insists —are humorous, affectionate snapshots of Mexicans and gringos in unusual, often astonishing situations. There’s the hilarious and vindicating account of how he and a big, tough Mexican friend caught up with the American who stole two wheels off his then-rare Honda because the American’s was the exact same model and he needed them. Fryer and his strong-arm pal left the thief crying for mercy in the Plaza Del Sol parking lot, his car down on its frame minus two rear wheels, no spare, and still there two days later.
Because it names names, including those of criminals, Fryer’s book may be hazardous to his health. The Guadalajara shop that printed it removed its name from the book after getting threats, and a friend who provided editing services insisted on having his name blacked out of every copy distributed, for the same reason.
