Grade 1-4-Radius, the son of Sir Cumference and Lady Di of Ameter, ventures on a heroic quest to earn his knighthood. He first proves his ability to make a "knightly right angle," as Sir D'Grees has trained him, and then doubles the right angle to make a straight angle. So he is sent off with the family medallion, in the shape of a circle (cardboard medallion included), to rescue the missing King Lell. Falling bridges, a cryptic riddle, a crocodile-infested moat, and a winding labyrinth all must be mastered before finding the king and his twin dragons, known as "Pair of Lells." Sir Cumference has something to offer a wide range of readers. Some will be too young to understand the math and the word puns but will enjoy the story of a knight rescuing a king. Others will puzzle over the math and how to use the protractor (medallion) to solve the riddle. This group will be helped by the somewhat primitively painted pictures, which give clues to these angled decisions and enhance the story of a brave knight on his quest. Still other children will note the story, groan at the puns, and wish for more sophisticated illustrations. This book has a stronger story line than that found in most math books. This book is adorable! I love how the story was so brilliantly meshed together with medieval life and math. After purchasing, I bought two more of these books. The pages are thick and are full of beautiful color. I think all ages could enjoy the story, but certainly school children, who are actually learning about the subject.
This whole book series is absolutely amazing for teaching math to students. All of the books have great stories (this one about a boy who is on a quest to become a knight) which incorporate math vocabulary and concepts all throughout the book. My fifth graders loved when I read this book aloud to them and had a fun time identifying all of the math vocabulary in the text. This book is great to review math concepts or to introduce them and it is a great way to incorporate literacy into mathematics.
So I heard about these through a blog and wondered why I had never heard about them before! I bought this and have fun reading it to my three year old. She doesn't yet understand the meaning of the play on words. But, she loves the stories. I LOL forward to the day that she understands the deeper, mathematical significance so we can enjoy the stories in a whole new light!
***spoiler alert***My kid thinks the Pair of Lells are hilarious to the point of now never forgetting what parallel lines look like - like 2 dragon tails side by side. They're not really funny, but he thinks the idea is very silly and laughs about it every time we re-read it.
The Sir Cumference books are great for kids interested in math. My 8yo son, who loves math, devours these, though my 8yo daughter who is not interested in math, finds these uninteresting as well. But they teach concepts in a really great, fun way.
Great series for kids
This is a great math book. It teaches kids while also entertaining. I purchased three of the Sir Cumference books for our library and the kids love them. The service was quick and the books were exactly as described.
This product blew me away. It made math fun and was a great attention-grabber for the lesson.
